You probably know that Google has launched a new social networking product. Google Plus lets you separate your followers into circles. This eliminates the problem that plagued us in Facebook before they added Facebook Fan Pages. That sounds good and lets us keep things separate, right?
However, Google Plus isn’t really open to businesses. I’ve heard a lots of complaints from folks who have had their accounts deleted. This is because they set up a profile under their business name. Right now, accounts are for individuals only.
If you’ve been pay attention to what I’ve been telling you, you have a Google Profile set up for your name or pseudonym. You can use this name to set up your Google Plus account.
Remember that Google Plus in still in beta. If you don’t have an account or an invitation, you can leave a comment telling me you need one. Google is rolling the service out in waves. Sometimes you can just sign up and sometimes you can’t.
Google tells us that they are working on setting the site up for businesses. I really think they will do this, but I don’t know how long it will be before it’s ready. We’ll just have to be patient and see how things get set up. Once this is in place, you will be able to put your book titles there.
In the meantime, make sure you have a good personal Google profile If you don’t already. If you need help, pick up the free report at Social Networking for Writers. Start building relationships with folks who are your prospective readers and others in the publishing industry, agents, editors, and your fellow writers. Remember that social networking is all about building relationships.
However, don’t send only writing related updates to your reader’s or writer’s circles. Share some of yourself with these folks. Readers want to connect with you as a person. You may think your life is ordinary, but to your readers, it’s fascinating (or at least encouraging to know that you have car trouble and your washer goes out too).
When Google reveals their business platform for Google Plus, you will be ready with a group of folks who will be interested in you and your writing. Don’t overlook Google Plus as part of your social media plan.
When you get your Google Plus account set up, leave a comment so I can add you to my circles.
Write on,
Lynn

I like Google+ for precisely the reasons you detail, but a couple of times I’ve wanted to announce something and have hesitated. Don’t think we’ve found our stride on it yet. It’ll be interesting to see how it develops.
