Are You Letting Your Voice Help You Build A Relationship With Your Readers?

We started a discussion on Twitter during #writechat about letting your voice help you build a relationship with your readers. Most people said they didn’t like their voice, didn’t know where to start, or just were afraid to try.

I assured everyone that you don’t need a perfect (there’s that word again) recording to have your readers relate to you. You already know that readers are drawn to characters who have flaws. The same applies to you, the author, as well. You don’t need to be perfect. Just reach out to with your voice to connect to your readers.

It’s easy to create a short audio for your readers. You need a few simple tools.

  • Audacity
    • This free software will let you record and edit audio files
  • Both Windows and Mac computers come with recording software
  • A USB microphone
    • Using a headset attached to your audio jacks will give you a bad quality recording
    • You can use a headset such as Logitech for better results
    • If you really like doing audio, you can move up to a professional microphone later.
  • An audio plugin for your WordPress blog (you do have a WordPress blog, right?)
    • This plugin will also let you put podcasts on iTunes when you really get excited about using audio

Start small. A great first step is to put up an audio file on your blog’s About page.  This simple step let your readers feel closer to you.

If you really want to move into audio in a big way, Mike Stewart can help you with products and training that help in with letting your voice help you build a relationship with your readers.

Do you use audio? Leave a comment and share your experiences.

Write on,

Lynn

  1. Great post. I think adding audio and video can really make your site more empathetic. Seeing and hearing someone just makes more of a connection. Recording things with Audacity is a snap, and making videos isn’t much harder, really. Many of the new video cameras have USB connections built in and come with free video editing software. Almost every PC comes with windows movie maker, and Mac’s are all equipped with video editing software, so I am told. I have a lot of videos on how to make videos on my Youtube channel, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TELDHr8Jlk

  2. Thanks for your list of tools.

I don’t use audio or video much, because time is precious and these options are slow. I can scan a page with my eyes and rand read at top speed. With audio and video I have to wait for it to download, play, download some more play and have to reach the end before I know what it’s all about. It’s a very slow process, not very exciting to watch and equally slow to create.

I do know that the current generations are so audio, video dependent that they are great traffic generators.
As we all try to fit more into our life, reading it seems to me is still the fastest option.

    Warm regards
